| I think the key word here is enclosed- I don't like to smell smoke outside or inside. But the situation can be more controlled indoors.- |

From someone who has some bad reactions to second hand smoke, I have to say- HECK YEAH BAN IT ALLTOGETHER!!
I heard that a bill is being worked on right now trying to ban smoking within a certain number of feet from doors and windows. Currently where I live it is a 50 ft rule, which is not always enforced. I think a special extremely well ventilated smoking room should be built at least 100-200 feet away from main buildings. JMHO! |

I think it should be banned in enclosed - indooor & outdoor.... especially in eating areas. Nothing worse than trying to eat or enjoy a coffee & having someone puffing away at another table...& it doesn't have to be close by especially with a breeze blowing.
Yes... I am a reformed smoker... (one of those habits you pick up at an age when you think it's cool) I suppose we can be the worse critics.

| You know Cade, I've never thought about that, but reflecting a little, I do see what you mean. And you're probably right, most women view gaining weight as something worse than smoking. I myself hate the weight I've gained, but I hate smoking even more. I realized that today I did see only one or two guys lighting up, and a dozen or so women lighting up. What is going on with that picture? |

Firstly let me say that Yes i smoke and i do aggree with the ban for places where you eat but i dissagree with the ban on social places as i live in a small village where there used to be 3 locals that since the ban came on the go here in Scotland has now withered down to 1. Infact the last time I was at my local was the night before the ban and it is no longer there.
Now let me explain the argument first off there were 3 pubs which had regulars and every weekend were full of drinkers out for a good time then the ban came out and it got so bad that 2 had to close because simply everyone stayed at home to drink or they became regulars at the 1 pub standing (they managed to somehow work their way round the ban and everyone there smokes).
Now because everyone staying at home or drinking on the street and i mean Adults not just Kids with a bottle of cider lol (ahh the days) :) there was a major increase in Violance and crime.
All this because of some simpleton thinking that Smokers shouldnt have the right to Smoke anymore to be Frank why didnt they just make it illegal to smoke and be done with it.
So in short YES i aggree to some of the ban and No for some also lol
Sorry just updating as i left one opinion out.
It is all very well for non smokers to say yes it should be banned everywhere.
Put it like this if I was to complain about all the joggers that stupidly run on the main roads (and for some reason there is heaps of them) and cause blatent dangers to themselfs and drivers. Then I managed to get a ban on anyone jogging in a public place do you think that would be very fair on all the joggers who like to go out at night for a wee jog round the block to keep themselfs fit? Yet they werent allowed because of some NON jogger getting it banned. |

One of the reasons smoking has been banned in public places is the effects of passive smoking & the devastating effects on your health.
The non-smoker didn't get a choice & was really smoking anyway. An english friend of mine recently returned from visiting her family in England. She commented on how the little country pubs were still allowing smoking & she had to go outside as she couldn't cope with it.
I remember working in an office, half smokers, at times you could cut the air with a knife from the smoke. Who knows what effect that has had on my health for over the ten years I was there. All working offices are now smoke free due to health regulations.
It's unfortunant that our young women are smoking... if they only knew what it really did to them & how they looked maybe they'd think twice.
Hopefully my son won't take up smoking.... It's been many, many years since I smoked but my ex smokes like a chimney & is severely suffering the effects of his lifestyle.
To Health! Without It... You Have....!

They say there's nothing worse than a reformed smoker, well I just got worse and I quit in 1964 on July 4th Independence Day which is a long time ago.
What made me worse was when my Grandfather died of Emphysema caused from smoking at 70, but then that's old enough, right? I watched him take no more than three steps and have to hang on to the counter and gasp for breath. He died in his favorite chair in the back yard with a ring of Bull Durham flakes around him and his dog in his lap.
Then I got worse yet when I watched my brother die at 58 from Lung Cancer caused from smoking and leave his children and grandchildren to mourn over him. His last days were so painful he was almost incoherent from all the pain medication he had to take and finally his lymph nodes in his throat became so swollen it suffocated him.
Two of his kids are with me now so they can attend my sisters memorial service this Wednesday who just died at 65 from C.O.P.D. caused by, you guessed, smoking. I just found out it was diagnosed 10 years ago in stage one where it could have been controlled if she quit smoking. She did try but the grip was too strong. The last year she was in and out of the hospital so often they knew her by her first name and three weeks ago they sent her home to die. She lie in a hospital bed in her front room gasping for what little breath she could get of pure oxygen she had been on for months 24 hours a day. She could no longer carry on a conversation and was awake only 30 seconds at a time, knowing she was dying for weeks before it finally happened. She coughed so hard she broke two ribs and had to be on strong morphine doses to bear the pain she was in.
Yes you could say I'm anti-smoking. I can't for the life of me figure out why so many people do it now that all the scientific proof is available that it kills. I especially can't understand why it continues at all when almost everyone you can talk to knows someone personally that died early from the ravages of tobacco. I watched relatives and friends who visited my sister step out on the front porch for a smoke break while she lie there dying as a vision of where they may be in a few years.
The cost to everyone for medical care caused by smoking is an unnecessary burden and the damage caused by the act itself adds even more to the bill.
I think making it illegal would be a blessing. It may just break the habit for a few that were as weak as my sister. At least we wouldn't have to watch teen-agers lighting up on the streets oblivious to what they are doing. |

Right Firstly i am not a hypocrit but i aggree that this lowsy ban is usless and that they should of considered making Smoking Illegal My first post was simply to state my opinion on the effects of the ban.
Goodness knows how many times i have tried to stop but failed I think Not being able to get it quite so easily and of course being Illegal may have a better effect on the major majority of Smokers to stop.
I mean heck back in 1906 it was legal to buy Heroine from the pharmasist as back then they said it was good for keeping the bowels in check and opening your mind (lmao) but Now it is a highly illegal A class DRUG which if caught in possesion you could go to jail for a lengthy time. Now as far as i know Heroine is a very addictive drug and legal back then it was estimated 7 out of 10 people used it and im not sure how it came to be illegal but if it wasnt then how many addicts would there be today? Alot more than there is now i would say.
So they should just go the full hog and make it illegal then maby the next generations might not Smoke or at least the majority of them wouldnt as you will always get illegal activity no matter what.
There is also the TAX issue in this where do you think the goverment get almost 39% of their TAX money yes you guessed it Cigarettes and here in Britain we have our NHS and that TAX money is what funds that so basically you could say that Smokers are really paying for their Hospital treatment but thats another argument :) |

People who smoke should go outside to smoke. I hate smelling like cigartte smoke, ewww!
I like to smell clean, and I hate breathing in that second hand smoke.
Let the smokers smoke, but outside where no one has to smell it, breathe it, smell like it  , be by it!

Hi No-Brainer,
Wow... you have certainly had your fair share....
I know the revolving door to the hospital issue.... my ex is almost a daily visitor.... not only the smoking (3 pkts day $$$) but alcohol lifestyle. To say his life sucks is an understatement... let alone the effect he still has on our lives watching him deteriorate... at least he doesn't live with us so we don't have to watch on a daily basis... There is nothing worse that listening to someone coughing up their guts each morning.... been there done that....
He was recently in hospital for 2 weeks & they offered him nicatene patches.... of course, he refused & worse is he gets bronchitis & shouldn't smoke...
All I can hope is that my son realises the damage it causes.... not only alcohol but smoking....
I'll get off my soap box now...
Another glorious day in Sydney Aust.

The downstairs neighbors smoke something awfull, and of course it rises up into our apartment if we have the windows and patio door open. It's so bad that we can no longer keep the window open in the kids room cause for some reason the cigarette smoke drifts into thier room more often than any other room. My kids hate that smell and make gagging sounds whenever we pass someone smoking in the street.
I agree that it should be made illegal completely! |

It's amazing how much the smoke fumes do travel.
This morning my girlfriend & I went for a walk... stopped for our coffee. A woman had gone outside to smoke & it drifted right back inside. Normally we would be sitting outside but they are renovating the whole area. Thankfully it will be finished before summer.
